Performance Parts 101

December 31st, 2010

In the automotive industry, the term ‘performance parts’ is used for a variety of car and truck parts or accessories, that are designed to enhance a vehicle’s performance. The term is generally tied to the aftermarket industry which makes sense considering that car or truck enhancement parts or accessories are typically purchased after the original purchase. This is not to say that O.E.M. manufacturers won’t create performance parts, because they often do.

Products such as Borla Exhausts, K&N Air Intake filters, ReadyLift Suspension Kits, or Bilstein shocks are considered performance parts because they are created to enhance car or truck performance. On the other hand, the O.E.M. exhaust, intake filter, suspension kit, or shocks that come with the newly purchased vehicles are generally stock parts designed to meet standards at a reasonable price. Someone looking to boost their car or truck’s performance will then purchase an aftermarket part designed to boost performance.

Strictly being aftermarket however, does not categorize a car or truck part or accessory as a performance part. Aftermarket products may include seat covers, car covers, bumpers, sun visors, make-specific paraphernalia (such as TRD’s line of Toyota? accessories), and steering wheel covers. These products are based on aesthetics, comfort, or brand loyalty, not performance. This would make them a car or truck accessory, but not a performance part.

Performance Parts may also play slightly different but overlapping roles from one car or truck to another. For example, K&N’s quality oil and air filtration products are available for virtually every modern vehicle under the sun. However, while lift kits tend to be popular among Ford?, Chevy?, Dodge? and Toyota? truck owners, you are unlikely to see a demand from Mercedes-Benz? or Porsche? owners. This isn’t to say that popular Porsche? and Mercedes? parts (aftermarket at least) are always different from the more popular truck performance parts. Manufacturers are starting to notice and react to new consumer demands. For example, Borla, known for its quality SUV and Truck exhausts, made the cross over and began to offer exhaust systems for Porsche? and Corvette? a few years ago.

Purchasing a DVD Player For Your Vehicle

December 30th, 2010

The technological advances for the automotive industry have greatly changed the way most of us drive and ride as passengers. The days of long boring drives are certainly over. Now everything from movies to video games can be enjoyed within the confines of the car. The addition of DVD players to vehicles has definitely created a sense of relief for tired parents with young children in the back seat. If you are thinking about buying a DVD player, you may be making a decision that will do wonders to improve your stress level.

You should definitely be picky when it comes to choosing a DVD player for your vehicle. This type of technology is easy to duplicate so selecting any one at random is not recommended. It is still a serious investment of money so choose wisely and carefully. There are varying specs on DVD players as well so pay attention.

One of the first decisions you will have to make is whether you desire a portable DVD player or one that is built in to your vehicle. A portable one will be easy to take into other vehicles but the built in one is stuck. If you only want it for the car then that may be an easy choice but some people like the freedom that comes with a portable unit.

If you burn your own DVDs at home as well as purchase them new then you need to be sure the DVD player you buy will play both types. Look on the packaging for the types of DVDs it can play. It would be a shame to spend money and then discover later that it will not even play your movies.

It is probably a wise idea to steer clear of no name brands or those that are very low cost. Those types of products rarely last as long as you want them to. It often is worth it to invest extra money in to a name brand that you know from experience that you can trust.

Try reading some consumer reviews online before you decide which brand to invest in. This can give you plenty of insight from others who have already purchased DVD players for auto use. This is a great way to learn who you can trust as a manufacturer as well as who you should avoid.

Do not be afraid to get creative. With a little extra work you can do such things as install video screens in the back of your sun visor so that they can be viewed when the car is stopped. DVD players and accessories are quite functional in many formats.

Try out the DVD player at the store before you buy to make sure that it works. It is something you need to know before you install it. Even a portable DVD player should be inspected and turned on. Making sure it works will eliminate the hassle of having to bring it back.

No matter what type of DVD player you get, you must make sure that you follow all laws. Never watch it while the car is in motion if you are the driver. Safety comes first.

Have You Run Out Of Romantic Ideas?

December 28th, 2010

Maybe you have run out of ideas to do for your partner. You have been to every local restaurant, walked along all the local trails in your area and bought countless boxes of chocolates. Here are a few ideas for you to show your partner just how much you love them. You may think that some of them are too cheesy or corny, but just try them and see what happens! Sometimes it is the little detailed things that take time and thought, but may cost next to nothing that say more!

1. Buy a packet of glow in the dark stars and stick the stars on the roof above your bed to spell out a message such as “I Love You” When the lights go down, your message will be revealed!

2. Buy a stylish hand mirror and give it to your partner as a gift. Include a card in the box or attached to the mirror that says something like “In this mirror you will see the image of the most beautiful woman in the world.”

3. Take a book that your partner is reading and using a pencil, underline letters in a section of the book she has yet to read to spell out a love letter.

4. Take a day off work and dedicate it to your partner. Plan a few things that you know they would enjoy. You could drive into the country, find a grassy hill and lie with your partner and look up at the clouds.

5. Get a piece of paper and some crayons. Draw a bright childlike picture with a smiley sun and two stick figures holding hands. Write a little love message. Next get a large formal envelope. Place your drawing inside and type up a formal address label of your partner’s work and put For the immediate and urgent attention of: ……. Mail it to your partner so they receive a nice little surprise in the middle of a busy day.

6. Leave a long stem rose where your partner will find it with a note on it saying:
“Thank you for coming into my life.”

7. If your partner has long hair, take the time to brush it using long slow strokes.

8. On your partner’s birthday, plan a treasure hunt round the house for them to find their present. Hide a few of the clues on your person.

9. Organize a professional photo shoot to obtain a portrait of the two of you as a couple. Frame the picture and put it somewhere prominent. Remember to make sure you give your partner plenty of notice so that they can get ready.

10. If your partner has voice mail at work or on her mobile, leave a little love message like

“Just wanted to let you know that I’m thinking of you.” They will appreciate this anytime but especially if they are going through a rough period.

11. If you are going to be separated for a few days, make a homemade survival kit for them. It can contain anything, from your iPod with all their favourite songs, to bubble bath and a face mask, a rose, and a little sealed love note for each day you are apart.

12. Buy some rose petals and place them behind the sun visor on the passenger side of your car. Take a post it note and write, “I Love You” on it and stick it to the back of the sun visor.
As you are driving to a romantic destination, look at your partner and tell her she has a mark on her cheek. She will pull down the sun visor to use the mirror and be showered in rose petals and see your note.

13. If your partner is going away, put a little love note in each of their socks they have packed in their suitcase. They will get a nice surprise!

14. Create a love montage by collecting some photographs of you and your partner, some ticket stubs of places you have visited and any other small odds and ends that have special meaning to you both. Take these items and get them professionally framed in a three dimensional montage. Alternatively, buy a frame and create a simple montage yourself.

15. Buy a tree with your partner and plant it in a special spot. Each year on your anniversary, have a glass of champagne next to your tree and talk about how your love and the tree have grown.
